Gearhart Indoor Dog Park: A place for dogs to play

Cliff Brockmann and Kristyne Ranney were not really planning to open an indoor dog park, although they recognized the need. They have a big dog and he needs lots of exercise and the beach isn’t always an option, especially in the rain or you’re weary of washing down the dog after every beach visit.

Last year the couple, who reside in Seaside, began looking for a place. They found what they consider to be an excellent location in the North Coast Plaza in Gearhart.

“At least for now, with us just starting, it seems a good fit,” Brockmann said.

What you’ll find when you visit Gearhart Indoor Dog Park is a large and airy dog-centric space. There are two clearly designated play areas, one for large dogs, another for petites. There are agility course type of toys and the flooring is pretty great.

“It’s specially designed for dog agility courses, it’s ¾″ thick and water resistant,” Brockmann said. “It’s easy to care for and keep clean.”

Brockmann is an Oregon native who has lived in Seaside a long time. Prior to opening the indoor dog park, he was a hotelier.

Right now options for use of the dog park are fluid. $39 buys you a monthly membership for one dog; additional dogs are $2 more. There is a $7 walk in fee that buys you two visits in the same day, a boon if you’re traveling. All dogs must have current shot records on file before entering. These can be faxed in advance by your veterinarian, also a boon if you’re traveling. The required vaccinations are rabies, Bordetella, DAZPP or DHLPP. No aggressive dogs are allowed.

Dogs must be at least four months old and at 6 months, neutered or spayed. While the dog park is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, the facility is closed on major holidays. If you’ve come to play and stay, you are responsible and liable for your own dog’s safety and messes.

Monday through Friday doggy day care is available as well as weekend drop-offs with a two hour minimum.

The indoor dog park also offers humans free wi-fi, television and seating throughout the play park.

“So far we’ve been getting nothing but positive feedback,” Brockmann said. “People come to socialize with each other while their dog enjoys being with or making new dog friends.” He said he’s heard from owners that the play area is a boon to shy dogs, skittish dogs, and dogs who have spent so much time with their humans they forget what it’s like to have doggy friends.

“It’s also therapeutic for humans,” Brockmann said. “What’s more uplifting than seeing wagging tails? That makes everyone smile, seeing happy dogs.”

In addition to the play space, there is an outdoor gated area for dogs to relieve themselves. There’s also a store selling snacks for pets and humans, as well as pet toys.

It’s pretty comfortable.

Sharon Wozniak is the cheerful face at the reception area.

She loves dogs. That’s obvious.
