With only 30 votes separating four candidates in the Sunset Empire Park and Recreation District race for Position 4, the unofficial results still await a final count.

In unofficial results from the Clatsop County Board of Elections, John Chapman held about 26% of the total votes cast, earning 320 of the 1,234 votes counted.

Candidates Katharine Parker and Marti Wajc each received 25% of the vote; Parker with 311 votes; three more than Wajc, who garnered 308. Shirley Yates received 290 votes, 23.5% of the total. There were five write-ins.

Ballots are still coming in, County Clerk Tracie Krevanko said. “We are still receiving ballots from other counties and resolved challenged ballots to count.”

The county’s board of elections has until June 10 to certify results.

To trigger a recount the results need to be within one-fifth of one percent of total votes cast for the office.

As of Friday, they would need to be closer than three votes.

The Position 4 seat became vacant after board member Edward Hassan announced plans to move outside the district.

In Position 5, Lindsey Morrison held about 42% of the vote in unofficial results, receiving 476 of the 1,142 votes counted. Patrick Duhachek garnered 394 votes, about 35% of the talley; Rodney Roberts followed with 269 votes or 23% of the total. There were three write-ins.

“I’m honored to be elected to the Sunset Empire Board of Directors,” Morrison said Wednesday. “Thank you to all who put their confidence in me. I will bring my very best to this position and I look forward to getting started.”

The seat had been held by Rodney Roberts, appointed earlier this year after district board president Alan Evans stepped down.

Veronica Russell, Jeremy Mills and Michael Hinton fill the other three board seats. Each of their terms expire in 2021.

The timeline for the transition will recognize the new director and outgoing directors, executive director Skyler Archibald said at a district board meeting earlier Tuesday.

The last day of service for the outgoing directors will be the last day of June.

New board members will be sworn in at the July board meeting, at which time the board will select a board president and officers.

While the district’s executive director Skyler Archibald declined to comment on the election until final results are in, he said he has been “very impressed with the interest demonstrated by so many individuals in serving on our board.”

“I enjoy residing and working in an area where many residents are civically minded,” Archibald said. “I look forward to working with our board of directors moving forward and continuing our goal of providing wonderful recreation experiences for our community and guests.”
