Seaside Aquarium responded to a Guadalupe fur seal Monday, April 25. The fur seal had hauled out on the beach south of the Oysterville, Washington, approach.

According to Tiffany Boothe of the aquarium, the pup was only about 7-10 pounds, cold, dehydrated, and out of its range. The male pup was easily captured and is being transferred to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, California for rehab and eventual release.

Since 1995 the Seaside Aquarium has part of the Southern Washington/Northern Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network.

Guadalupe fur seals are considered threatened with and estimated population of only 34,000.

Their numbers got so low that they were thought to have become extinct twice, once in 1928 and again in 1954.

Earlier this year the aquarium aided in another rescue of a young Guadalupe fur seal which had been entangled in rope. The animal was also transferred to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito and has already been released. A satellite tag was placed on the animal before releasing it and as of March 27, the animal was back on Guadalupe Island where it belongs.
