Girls basketball: Seaside downs Dayton, 42-27

A light, defensive pressure and a bunch of offensive rebounds was all Seaside needed Tuesday night against Dayton, in a nonleague girls basketball game at the Gulls’ Nest.

It all led to a 42-27 win for the Lady Gulls, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated.

Seaside applied a toned-down, full-court press for three quarters, forcing 19 Dayton turnovers through the third quarter. And the Gulls were collecting offensive rebounds at will in the first half, on their way to a 23-8 halftime lead.

While just four players made it into the scoring column for the Pirates, the Gulls had 10 players score at least two points. Emy Kiser and Lilli Taylor led the way with seven points apiece, while Morgan Blodgett and Annaka Garhofer scored six points each.

Garhofer made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter, and Blodgett and Taylor scored off turnovers, helping Seaside to a 31-8 lead early in the third period.

Taylor also had five assists, while the Gulls had 13 offensive rebounds and 11 steals.

“Dayton was without their big (post player), so that changed the dynamic of the game,” said Seaside coach Mike Hawes. “It would have been good for us to face a talented big, cause we’ll definitely see some in league.

“For the most part I’m pretty pleased,” he said. “We did a lot of good things, and some of our bad things were in pursuit of the good. Balanced scoring, everyone played, we won … what can I say? Life is good.”
