The Seaside boys soccer team limped across the finish line of the 2018 season Saturday night, Nov. 3 at Broadway Field.

With four players out and a few others playing injured, the Gulls went down kicking, but on the losing end of a 1-0 score to North Marion.

Another few minutes and the Gulls might have scored, but as it was, the Huskies managed to hold on for the win to secure a spot in the 4A state semifinals.

In other quarterfinal action, Woodburn defeated Cowapa League champion Valley Catholic, 4-0.

The season comes to a close for a battered and bruised Seaside team (10-6 overall).

A goal by North Marion senior Edgar Lopez in the 10th minute of the first half held up over the next 70 minutes for the Huskies, as the two teams had limited opportunities on the offensive end.

Lopez was taking most of the shots for North Marion. The senior team captain converted his first attempt, as he took a crossing pass into the penalty area, and scored on a left-footed shot to the right post, past a diving Samson Sibony.

But that would be all the scoring for Lopez, who scored six goals in a game against Philomath last season.

The Huskies had just three shots on goal in the first half, the other two shots coming off the foot of Lopez, and both saved by Sibony.

Seaside had just one shot on goal in the first half (Chase Januik’s attempt deflected off the cross bar), and second half attempts by Dodger Holmstedt and Ryan Hague were both saved by North Marion keeper Colby Gianella. A free kick by Irving Contreras sailed wide left, and a final shot on goal from Parker Conrad was also saved by Gianella.

The Gulls lose 10 seniors to graduation.

STAYTON — The Gulls opened the Class 4A state playoffs Oct. 30 in Stayton, where Seaside scored a 1-0 win over the No. 5-seeded Eagles, who were the only team to defeat powerhouse Woodburn this year.

Seaside’s win was one of three games Nov. 2 in which lower-seeded teams defeated higher-seeded teams on the road.

Elsewhere, North Marion topped No. 4 La Grande (2-1), and No. 15 Newport defeated No. 2 seed Ontario (2-1).

Meanwhile, Seaside and Stayton were two familiar foes, meeting for the third time in three years.

Stayton won the two previous regular season games, defeating the Gulls 4-1 in 2016 and 5-0 last year.

The Eagles were ranked No. 1 earlier this season, and scored a 1-0 win over Woodburn.

Chase Januik assisted Dodger Holmstedt for a goal 30 minutes into the first half for the game’s only score.

The difference?

“Heart,” said Seaside coach John Chapman. “The boys played with a lot of heart. Our defense was just a rock, (Samson) Sibony had an amazing game in goal, (Natanael) Conrad and (Luke) Verley were masters of the back line, and Irving (Contreras), Josue (Sanchez) and Stephen Snyder all had big games.”

And did the Gulls get conservative after their goal?

“Heck no,” Chapman said. “The Gulls are not going to ‘park the bus.’ It was a crazy win, but well-deserved. It was one of the biggest upsets in the state this year.”
