“Seaside, the end of the Lewis & Clark Trail: 1805-1806.”

So reads one of the most photographed icons of Seaside received a refurbishing, courtesy of the city’s Public Works Department and one of its members, Matt Long.

Last week, Public Works Director Dale McDowell asked Mayor Jay Barber to hold a formal unveiling to provide a “small-town feeling,” McDowell said.

Barber and McDowell pulled away the drop cloth Monday under a sky of steady rain.

Long said he matched the original colors and design of the sign, including a seagull, ocean waves and rising sun.

“We power washed it and sanded it down,” Long said. “There were multiple, multiple coats of paint on there. We had to try to get it down to the bare wood as best as possible.”

A clear finish was applied to help the paint last longer.

The Prom was completed in 1921, McDowell said, and the sign added in 1996, designed and painted by artist Sheila McKinnon.
