WARRENTON — Late-night Clatsop Clash soccer at Hal Snow Volunteer Field … it was just like old times Tuesday night on Ridge Road in Warrenton, where Astoria and Seaside put their soccer skills on the line for a Fishermen vs. Gulls doubleheader.

Jerry Boisvert would have loved it. Fitting, since it was “Jerry Boisvert Night.”

The winners and losers didn’t really matter — it was just a night to celebrate the local teams and the man who put North Coast soccer on the map.

For the record, 160 minutes of soccer resulted in a Seaside sweep. The Seaside boys cruised to a 7-0 win, while the Lady Gulls scored an early goal and held on for a 1-0 victory.

Also for the record, there aren’t many soccer players in Clatsop County who have not received instruction from Jerry Boisvert at some point. Including many of Tuesday night’s players, from both schools.

“Coach Boisvert was all about helping kids of all ages,” said Dan Gaffney, between games Tuesday night. Gaffney has always been heavily involved with area soccer.

“He would coach any player of any gender from any part of Clatsop County and beyond,” he said of Boisvert. “His loyalty was to teach soccer to anyone who wanted to play the game.”

Members of Boisvert’s family were introduced at midfield and honored with a plaque, commemorating Jerry Boisvert Night.

“As a founding father (of the Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association), he helped us with all the initial efforts to start this important youth organization,” Gaffney said. “His passion for the game of soccer and his love for teaching the game to young people was evident in his daily work to make LCYSA a vibrant and effective organization for all young people, as he organized camps, coached clubs, officiated games and maintained the LCYSA fields.”

As for Tuesday’s action, the night opened with an easy win for the Seaside boys.

The Gulls built a 2-0 halftime lead, then scored three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to pull away. Seaside added two late goals to break the record for the most goals scored in a Clatsop Clash game, snapping the mark held by the 1997 Gulls (in a 6-1 win over Astoria).

It took just over seven minutes for Seaside to score the first goal, a shot from the left side by Bryce DeWinter that was just out of reach for Astoria keeper Tony Tumbarello.

Seaside did not score again until the 38:27 mark into the game. A foul on the Fishermen resulted in a free kick for the Gulls from 30 yards out. Irving Contreras’s shot glanced off the Astoria wall and into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Seaside’s Chase Januik was injured on a hard foul in the 27th minute and had to be helped from the field, but Januik returned in the second half and scored two goals in less than two minutes, both in the first six minutes of the half.

He scored on a crossing pass from DeWinter at the 4:17 mark, then scored into an open net at 5:57 for a 4-0 lead.

Januik assisted DeWinter on a close-range goal in the 49th minute, and the Gulls tacked on two goals in the final five minutes from Daniel Angulo (assist from DeWinter). DeWinter scored the hat trick with his third goal with just 30 seconds remaining, the assist from Januik.

Porter Whitsett had a big night defensively for the Fishermen, thwarting several Seaside attacks.

In the girls’ game, Seaside had just two shots on goal the entire night, but escaped with a 1-0 win.

The Gulls avenged a loss to Astoria earlier in the season, in which the Fishermen rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two goals in the final three minutes.

There was no miracle rally in this one.

Off a pass up the middle from teammate Katie Zagata, Seaside’s Jessica Angulo-Joli scored on a breakaway goal for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Despite holding the advantage in possession time, Astoria could not find the tying goal.

Shots off direct free kicks in the first half by Elizabeth Whitsett and Meghan O’Meara both came up empty, and a Gracie Cummings-to-Nara Van de Grift play was stopped by Seaside keeper Taylor Carson.

The Gulls managed to turn Astoria attacks away, with defensive stops for Brianna Hill, Annaka Garhofer and Haily Strimple-Fields.

Likewise, the Fishermen played tough defense in the second half, not allowing a single shot on goal.
