BANKS — The Astoria girls golf team shot another season-best score, but the Lady Fishermen finished out of the state qualifying picture in Tuesday’s final round of the District 1/4A Regional tournament.

Valley Catholic won the team title with a two-round total 806, followed by Oregon Episcopal (832) and Scappoose (839) as the three state qualifiers.

Crook County was fourth (844) and Astoria fifth (848).

Yvonne Vinceri of Riverdale earned medalist honors with a 156. Astoria’s Samantha Hemsley and Jenna Travers finished eighth and ninth, respectively, to make the All-Region team.

Team-wise, “The difference between second and fifth was only 16 strokes, so it was a very competitive and exciting final round,” said Astoria coach Chris Hunt. “We shot a season best 420, shaving eight strokes off of our first day score.”

Hemsley finished with a 190, followed closely by Travers at 192.

“Jenna, Sarah (Lertora) and Gracie (Cummings) all shot personal bests today,” Hunt said. “Every player shot a personal best for us during the tournament, with Sarah and Gracie doing so on both days.”

Overall, he said, “the team played an awesome two days of golf and I’m so proud of how they competed and improved, not just at Regionals, but throughout the season.”

Seaside had just three golfers so did not score as a team. Tristyn McFadden led the Gulls with a two-round total 210. Caitlin Hillman finished with a 237, followed by Sydney Rapp (248), as all three Seaside golfers lowered their scores from Monday’s first round.
