BANKS — The Seaside boys golf team is sitting in third place after one round of the District 1 regional golf tournament, which concludes Tuesday at Quail Valley Golf Course.

Valley Catholic leads with a 310 team score, and Scappoose is second at 332. The Gulls carded a 347 in the opening round, to give the Cowapa League teams the top three spots after Day 1.

The top three teams qualify for next week’s state tournament. Crook County is currently in fourth at 369, 22 strokes behind Seaside, followed by Astoria (385), Banks (386), Molalla (387), Tillamook (392) and Corbett (423).

Tillamook’s Carter Lee is atop the individual leaderboard with a 73, with Valley Catholic’s Peter Boileau at 74. Seaside freshman Curtis Kunde is eighth with a first round 81. Jackson Kunde is 12th with an 85, followed by Samson Sibony (90), Connor Merrell (91) and Mason Shamion (97).

“We came into today with a goal of getting back to the state tournament,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “And while we didn’t score very well, we put ourselves in a good position to meet that goal. We’d like to score a little better (Tuesday), but if we shoot the same and finish in the top three we will have done what we set out to accomplish this week.

“Curtis played a great round today,” he said. “Usually it is the freshmen that succumb to the pressure of their first regional tournament, but he was the one who carried us today. The four upperclassmen all shot their season highs today.”

Jackson Kunde “played a Jekyll and Hyde round today,” Poetsch said. “He was even-par through six holes and leading the tournament. After a double bogey on the seventh he was still in the lead, but he let it get to him and he lost 12 strokes on the next six holes. After regaining his composure, he went on to play the final six holes in one-over par.”

Astoria had four golfers in the 90s in Monday’s round, led by Josh Olson with a 93. Connor Long shot a 96, followed by Dylan Altheide-Nielson (97), Taylor Palmberg (99) and Tryton Matlock (110).

In the girls’ tournament — also at Quail Valley — the Astoria Lady Fishermen are currently in fourth place in the team standings, just outside the top three state qualifying spots.

Astoria shot a season-best 428 team score, beating their previous best by 25 shots.

Four players shot personal best scores, including Samantha Hemsley (91), Sarah Lertora (118), Sierra Adams (120) and Gracie Cummings (133). Jenna Travers posted a 99.

The girls’ regional tournament also concludes Tuesday at Quail Valley.
