WARRENTON — It was a Clatsop Clash on the golf course Tuesday afternoon, as Astoria hosted Seaside in a Cowapa League dual golf match at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.

The Gulls scored a season-low score and improved to 1-1 in Cowapa League play with a 333-375 victory.

Seaside’s Jackson Kunde was medalist with a 78. Teammate Connor Merrell finished second with an 84, followed by Seaside’s Curtis Kunde (third, 85), Samson Sibony (fourth, 86) and Mason Shamion (fifth, 89).

Taylor Palmberg had Astoria’s top score with a 92. Other Fishermen scores were Josh Olson (93), Connor Long (95), Daniel Paswarck (95) and Dylan Altheide-Nielsen (103).

Jackson Kunde provided the highlight of the day for the Gulls, driving the green on the par four second hole and making his putt for an eagle.

He nearly followed it up with another eagle as his second shot on the third hole hit the pin. Kunde also had birdies on the eighth and 12th holes. Shamion also had birdies on No. 2 and No. 15. Curtis Kunde added the only other birdie for the Gulls, on the sixth hole.

“It was great seeing all five guys shoot in the 80s or lower today,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “The last time we did that was in the 2015 state tournament. We did a better job today of limiting our ‘blow-up’ holes.

“For some reason we struggled on No. 9 today, shooting two triples and two double bogeys, but otherwise we did a pretty good job of limiting damage.”

He added, “I think we had one other triple and maybe a handful of doubles from the other 85 holes we played. Other than Jackson’s eagle, nobody did anything spectacular. We just played solid golf.”

The Gulls will have a better idea of where they stand among the top teams in the state when they travel Friday to the “Raven Rumble” at Eagle Crest Ridge Resort.
