A fire to a single-story double-wide trailer on Friday at about 12:30 p.m. in the 33700 block of Highway 26 in Seaside displaced two adults.

It appeared the fire started a day or two before in a void space between two sections of roof next to the chimney of a wood stove after the occupants had used the wood stove, Seaside Fire Division Chief Dave Rankin said Saturday.

“It appeared the fire had been smoldering for some time before burning though the roof,” Rankin said. “A neighbor saw the smoke, evacuated the two residents, and had his wife dial 911 while he got up on the roof and started trying to put the fire out with a garden hose.”

Seaside sent two engines and Gearhart stood by Seaside’s fire station to cover the city.

“We had to do some extensive overhaul and cut a large section of the top roof to reach the void space and extinguish the smoldering areas of fire which had spread along the top of the lower roof,” Rankin said.

There was also some extensive water damage from the garden hose inside the living room and kitchen and minor smoke damage to the rest of the structure.

The scene was cleared around noon Friday.

The Red Cross responded to help address the immediate basic needs of those affected such as temporary housing, food, clothing, comfort kits with toiletry items, information about recovery services, and health and mental health services.
