BANKS — For the second year in a row, the Seaside boys golf team finished one spot shy of qualifying for the state tournament.

Scappoose won the team title of the District 1 Regional tournament, which concluded May 9 at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks.

Valley Catholic and Crook County securing the other two spots to next week’s state tournament, while the Gulls finished fourth.

The bright spot for Seaside — all five Gulls’ golfers who competed (a junior and four sophomores) will return next year.

As Tuesday’s scores were posted, it looked as if the Gulls might overtake defending state champion Crook County for the third and final qualifying spot for state.

But the Cowboys still had Mayson Tibbs on the course, and when Tibbs came in with a 69 for the day, it knocked 60 strokes off of Crook County’s team score and the Cowboys surged 17 strokes ahead of Seaside to secure their spot in Corvallis next week.

Scappoose carded a 636 team score, followed by Valley Catholic (653), Crook County (699) and Seaside (716). Astoria (798) placed eighth.Tibbs was the medalist with a three-under par 141 over the two rounds. The remainder of the all-Regional team was filled with players from the Cowapa League. Tillamook’s Carter Lee finished with a 151, while Scappoose teammates Nathan Mapes and Jake Gray tied for third at 152.

Seaside’s Jackson Kunde was ninth with a 166.

Kunde shot 82 on the second day to lead the Gulls. Samson Sibony shot 86 to finish at 175 for 15th. Mason Shamion finished with a 187 total, followed by Connor Merrell (188) and John Whittle (207).

“We made some great strides this year,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “We are disappointed we didn’t quite reach our goals, but we were right in the mix of things until the last group came off the course.

“When we started this season a couple months ago, I thought this was going to be a tough rebuilding year. But this group of guys worked their tails off and almost got us back to the state tournament. Once again I think we have the toughest region in the state and our team can be proud of what they accomplished this year.”
