- Stephanie Stevenson and Judy Woodmansee are delighted by the Whimsical Garden C-Art hand-painted by Nancy Hornshuh.
The Sou’ Wester Garden Club Annual Plant Sale takes place Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center
A selection of unique planters will make wonderful gifts for mom along with other popular items from the sale marketplace, including bakery, preserves and other treats.
The proceeds from this annual fundraiser support a Seaside High School scholarship and community initiatives such as a downtown Seaside hanging flower basket and financial support of the Seaside High School garden, planted and maintained by students that supply ingredients for the culinary arts program. The club’s most ambitious project is “down to earth — on hands and knees gardening” and funding additional maintenance of historic Butterfield Cottage Gardens, home to the Seaside Fourth of July old fashioned community social.
The 2017 Seaside graduate awarded a $1,000 garden club scholarship will be announced at the June Seaside High School awards program. The two recipients were Jack Whittle (2016), a freshman at the University of Montana, majoring in resource conservation and Alanna Kieffer (2014), a junior at Oregon State University where she is majoring in marine biology.
The scholarships are funded by a raffle and a silent auction, held in conjunction with the plant sale. The silent auction features planters illustrating “mom’s kitchen” and a host of additional unique planters. There are three raffle items created by talented friends and Garden Club members. A hand-painted whimsical garden cart with the caveat “no slugs allowed” includes loppers, shears, gloves and a kneeling pad. Another choice is a stunning large blue glass bowl fairy garden supported on a wrought iron base. The bowl has multiple other uses as a bird bath, wall hanging, table centerpiece or as a floral arrangement. The third item is an exquisite vintage window embellished in nostalgic glass pieces that will surely add a mesmerizing sparkle to any home or garden. Raffle tickets are available for $1 each. Raffle drawing at 11:30 on May 13. For further information call 971-221-4680.
