A 40-mile chase that began in Seaside ended with the death of a wanted violent fugitive who shot multiple times at police as he attempted to evade capture. He was then shot by police and transported to a Portland-area hospital. There were no injuries to law enforcement.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, onWednesday, the U.S Marshal’s office was tracking Andrew Garrette Dehart, 36, who was wanted on a warrant for attempted murder, kidnapping and first-degree assault concerning an incident in Clark County, Washington. The marshals were assisted by the Oregon State Police. They believed Dehart was armed and very dangerous.

The marshals located Dehart at an acquaintance’s residence in Seaside. Dehart drove away in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 26. The marshals and Oregon State Police were at about Milepost 22 on Highway 26 when Dehart apparently saw them and increased his speed, continuing eastbound on Highway 26. At about Milepost 25, Dehart began shooting from his truck at the officers.

One patrol vehicle was disabled after being struck by bullets.

Three law enforcement officers were waiting on the east side of the Dennis L. Edwards Tunnel at Milepost 41 and shot Dehart, seriously injurying him.
