Workshop for forest landowners to focus on fish passage, habitat

The Oregon Forest Resources Institute is hosting a free one-day workshop at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The workshop is designed for forest landowners on the best practices to restore and enhance fish habitats in forested streams. It is the first of two workshops, the second to be held Thursday, Oct. 29 in Salem.
The morning will be spent in the classroom, and attendees will receive technical assistance, tools and resources to help them with fish habitat and passage projects. Workshops will include “Oregon Plan Overview,” led by Greg Apke of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife; “Intro to Restoration,” led by Guillermo Giannico of the Oregon State University Extension Service; “Intro to Fish Passage,” led by Fran Cafferata Coe of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute; “Voluntary Forest Practice Measures,” led by Kyle Abraham of the Oregon Department of Forestry; “Economics of Fish Passage,” led by Justin Isle of Aquatic Contracting; “Thinking Like a Fish,” led by Guillermo Giannico of the Oregon State University Extension Service; and “Extension Logistics and Project Planning,” led by Melyssa Graeper of the Necanicum Watershed Council.
The afternoon will be spent in the field on the Lewis and Clark Tree Farm, managed by Greenwood Resources. The agenda also includes visits to a recent culvert replacement, an obliterated road and a habitat restoration project.
The institute is hosting the Seaside and Salem workshops in collaboration with various public and private partners, including the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Associated Oregon Loggers, the Oregon Small Woodland Association, Hancock Forest Management, the Oregon Forest Industries Council, Oregon State University and Greenwood Resources.
