WARRENTON — Three wins in two days — not a bad way to finish the 2015 summer season for the Warrenton Warriors.
One day after a 15-0 win over Neah-Kah-Nie, the Warriors swept a Junior State Baseball doubleheader with Seaside Tuesday, July 14 at Huddleston Field, 9-3 and 7-2.
The Warriors had strong performances on the mound in both games, as Jake Holthusen tossed a three-hitter in Game 1, while Joe Little pitched 5 2/3 innings in the second game, striking out four with two walks and one hit allowed.
“They (Holthusen and Little) both learned some things about pitching this summer, and they both made the improvements that we wanted to see,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “And offensively we made some big strides. It was definitely a successful summer season.”
Warrenton had to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the opener, as Seaside’s Jacob Bassett had a single to left field that scored Payton Westerholm to give the Gulls a two-run lead in the third inning.
The Warriors picked up a run in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring hit by Anthony Cochran, and Warrenton scored two runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch in the fifth to take the lead.
Warrenton took advantage of four walks and numerous wild pitches in the sixth to score five unearned runs.
Cochran had three of Warrenton’s seven hits in Game 1.
The Warriors led from start to finish in Game 2, as Gavon McFadden had a leadoff single and scored on a double by Little for a quick lead in the first inning.
Little and Dalton Knight had RBIs to push the lead to 4-0, and Hunter Wilson’s bases-loaded, three-run double in the fifth made it 7-1.
Rare appearances on the mound by Wilson, Justice Watson and David Foster closed out the game for the Warriors, as Carson Schulte had the lone hit for the Gulls.
Dylan Wallis and Gage McFadden gave up seven Warrenton hits.
Seaside hosts a doubleheader with Knappa at 4 p.m. Thursday at Broadway Field.
