The annual Seaside Beach Run is scheduled for July 18, with opportunities for walkers and runners of all ages.
On race day, registration is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 a.m. on the Promenade at 12th Avenue. The 5K Racewalk begins at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 5K PromWalk at 8:50, the 5K and 10K races at 9, the Kids’ Sand Dash at 10:30 and the Treasure Hunt at 10:45. The closing picnic will start at 11:15, with an awards ceremony at 11:30. Prizes will be awarded in several age groups and include. Lunch will be provided free.
The course for this year’s event will begin and end at the North Prom beach access at 12th Avenue, and all activities will be held on the beach.
Fit To Be Teens is hosting the fundraiser. All proceeds will go to the local nonprofit, whose goal is to support teen health and wellness in Clatsop County, said board member Michelle Brannon, general manager of Sunset Family Fitness. Last year, the proceeds, which were slightly less than $1,000, supported a teen who planned to join the U.S. Coast Guard as a rescue swimmer and needed to lose weight to be eligible. Fit to be Teen provided him a free personal trainer for six months. He lost about 75 pounds and decided to join the Navy instead.
How the proceeds will be used this year is to be determined. Regardless of the fundraising outcome, Sunset Family Fitness, which is affiliated with Fit To Be Teens, will continue to offer free limited memberships to all local middle and high schoolers. They also can receive discounted memberships after they graduate.
The Seaside Beach Run has been a community tradition since it was started by two local lifeguards, Ralph and Betty Davis, in 1966. Since then, when the event was an 8-mile run along the beaches in Seaside and Gearhart, the tradition has evolved. Routes have changed every so often and more activities have been added. The event also has been hosted by different organizations over the years. In 1989, the event was moved from August to July to eliminate conflict with the Hood 2 Coast Relays.
Fit To Be Teens was formed in 2010 to produce the event as a fundraiser. This year marks the 49th annual Seaside Beach Run, as it did not happen one year, Brannon said.
The cost to participate is $30 for the PromWalk; and $40 for the RaceWalk and 5K/10K Beach Races. Adult registrations includes a souvenir event T-shirt for pre-registrants, as supplies last.
Children 12 and younger may participate for free in the Kids’ Sand Dash and Treasure Hunt, but pre-registration helps organizers prepare for the activities.
